The Two Sets of Three – No Excuses, No Compromise

A Bible study for men built on John Wooden's "Two Sets of Three" principles, integrity (never lie, cheat, steal) and adversity (never whine, complain, make excuses). Uses Scripture to help men develop honest, responsible character and handle trials without complaint, grounded in God's grace rather than legalism.

Men's Bible Study: The Two Sets of Three – No Excuses, No Compromise

Inspired by John Wooden's "Two Sets of Three"

These timeless principles come from legendary basketball coach John Wooden's father, Joshua Hugh Wooden. He taught his sons two simple sets of rules to guide their lives: one for integrity and one for handling adversity. We're adapting them into a biblical "Men's Code" – not to earn God's grace, but to live out the strong, responsible character He calls us to as men.

Core Truth

This isn't about perfection or legalism. It's about honesty, ownership, and growth in Christ. Grace covers our failures, but responsibility transforms us.

Group Anchor Verse

“Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.”
— 1 Corinthians 16:13 (ESV)

The Two Sets of Three

Set 1: Integrity (Honesty with God and Others)

  1. Never Lie
    Scripture:
    • “Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor...” — Ephesians 4:25
    • “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.” — Proverbs 12:22
Why it matters: Lies erode trust – in marriages, families, work, and leadership. Truth builds credibility and reflects God's character.
Discussion Question: Where am I tempted to be "technically honest" instead of fully truthful?
  2. Never Cheat
    Scripture:
    • “Unequal weights are an abomination to the Lord, and false scales are not good.” — Proverbs 11:1
    • “Whoever is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much...” — Luke 16:10
Why it matters: Integrity shines when it costs something. Shortcuts undermine character and dishonor God.
Discussion Question: In what areas (work, taxes, relationships) am I tempted to cut corners?
  3. Never Steal
    Scripture:
    • “You shall not steal.” — Exodus 20:15
    • “Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work... that he may have something to share.” — Ephesians 4:28
Why it matters: Stealing isn't just taking things – it's taking time, credit, or trust. God calls us to be providers and givers.
Discussion Question: How am I honoring (or dishonoring) others with my time, resources, and effort?

Set 2: Adversity (Strength in Trials)

  1. Never Whine
    Scripture:
    • “Do all things without grumbling or disputing...” — Philippians 2:14
    • “Strengthen the weak hands... do not grumble against one another...” — James 5:8-9 (adapted)
Why it matters: Whining spreads discouragement and weakens faith. Men trust God instead of venting.
Discussion Question: Where am I venting frustration instead of turning to God in trust?
  2. Never Complain
    Scripture:
    • “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18
    • “Death and life are in the power of the tongue...” — Proverbs 18:21
Why it matters: Complaining focuses on what's wrong; gratitude builds resilience and honors God's sovereignty.
Discussion Question: What blessings from God am I overlooking right now?
  3. Never Make Excuses
    Scripture:
    • “Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.” — Proverbs 28:13
    • “Let us test and examine our ways, and return to the Lord.” — Lamentations 3:40
Why it matters: Excuses protect pride but block repentance and growth. Ownership leads to freedom in Christ.
Discussion Question: What situation am I blaming others (or circumstances) for instead of owning my part?

Group Reminder
Strong men bring sin and struggles into the light. We confess, repent, and support each other – no hiding, no judgment, just grace-fueled growth.

Weekly Accountability

  • Which of these six areas did the Holy Spirit highlight for me this week?
  • What specific step of obedience am I taking in response?

Final Group Discussion Questions

  1. If we truly lived by these Two Sets of Three—no whining, complaining, excuses, lying, cheating, or stealing—how would it change our homes, workplaces, church, and witness to the world?
  2. Which of the six "nevers" do you personally struggle with the most, and why do you think that area is a challenge for you?
  3. How does relying on God's grace (rather than our own effort) make it possible to grow in these areas without falling into legalism or discouragement?
  4. As a group, how can we practically support and hold each other accountable to this Men's Code in the coming weeks—without judgment, but with encouragement and prayer?
