Men’s Bible Study: The Lion & The Lamb – Fierce for Your Family, Gentle with Your Family

Theme Verse:
“Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; act like men; be strong. Do everything in love.”
(1 Corinthians 16:13-14)

Opening Hook (5 minutes)

Jesus is called both the Lion of the tribe of Judah (Revelation 5:5) and the Lamb of God (John 1:29).
He roared against the money changers in the temple to protect what was holy, yet He gently washed the dirty feet of His disciples and laid down His life for them.

As men, we are called to the same balance in our homes:

  • A Lion for your family — bold protector, provider, leader, and defender against evil.
  • A Lamb with your family — gentle, sacrificial, humble, and kind in the daily moments.

Too many men are lions at work and lambs nowhere, or lambs at home and lions nowhere. Biblical manhood requires both.

Goal of This Study

To become men who fiercely guard and lead our families while tenderly loving and serving them — refusing to be harsh, passive, or tyrannical.

Icebreaker (8–10 minutes)

Share one:

  • When have you seen a man be a “lion” well for his family (protection, courage, provision)?
  • Or a “lamb” well (gentleness, patience, sacrifice)?
  • Where do you personally struggle more — being too harsh or too passive?

Scripture Study & Discussion (25–30 minutes)

1. The Lion – Bold Protector & Leader
Proverbs 28:1

“The wicked flee though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.”

Ephesians 5:25
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.”

Joshua 1:9
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

  • What does it look like today for a man to be a lion for his family? (spiritually, physically, financially, morally)
  • Where in your home or community do you need to roar (set boundaries, confront sin, provide direction, protect from culture)?

2. The Lamb – Gentle & Sacrificial
Colossians 3:19

“Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.”

Philippians 2:5-8
“Have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who… made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant… humbled himself by becoming obedient to death — even death on a cross!”

1 Peter 3:7
“Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as co-heirs of the gracious gift of life…”

  • Why is gentleness not weakness, but strength under control?
  • How does being harsh or emotionally absent damage a family more than we realize?
  • What does sacrificial love look like in the everyday grind (not just big heroic moments)?

3. Jesus — Perfect Balance

  • Lion moments: Cleansing the temple (John 2:13-17), confronting Pharisees.
  • Lamb moments: Washing feet (John 13), forgiving the woman caught in adultery, dying for sinners.

Jesus never sacrificed truth for gentleness, nor gentleness for truth. He was both at the right time.

Real-Talk Questions (pick 3)

  1. In your home right now, are you leaning more Lion or Lamb? Why?
  2. What fears keep men from being lions (fear of conflict, people-pleasing, laziness)?
  3. What pride or wounds keep men from being lambs (anger, control, past hurt)?
  4. How can we protect our families without becoming controlling or harsh?
  5. What would your wife and kids say about you right now — lion, lamb, or both?

Action Steps & Challenge (5–7 minutes)

Choose one this week:

  1. Lion Step: Have a clear spiritual conversation or set a needed boundary with your family this week (family devotions, screen limits, confronting sin, financial decision).
  2. Lamb Step: Do one act of humble service for your wife or kids with no expectation of thanks (wash dishes, give a back rub, apologize first, play with the kids when you’re tired).
  3. Memorize Colossians 3:19 or 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 and pray it over your family daily.
  4. Ask your wife (or a close brother if single): “Where do I need to grow more as a lion? As a lamb?” Then listen without defending.

Closing Prayer (together)

Father, thank You that Jesus is both Lion and Lamb. Make us the same for our families.
Give us holy boldness to stand and fight for what’s right.
Give us tender hearts to serve and love gently.
Break every harsh spirit and every passive spirit in us.
Help us lead our homes with courage and humility — for Your glory and our families’ good.
In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.

Take it home:
Print or screenshot this study. Review it with your wife. Next week, come ready to share what happened when you stepped up as both Lion and Lamb.

Men, your family doesn’t need a tyrant or a pushover.
They need a Lion who lays down his life like a Lamb. That’s the man God is calling you to be. Let’s become him — together.
