Men’s Bible Study: The Gospel – What It Is and How to Share It

Leader’s Note:
This study is designed for a small group of men (8–12 recommended) meeting for 60–90 minutes. Focus on the clear, biblical definition of the gospel and practical ways to share it. Keep the tone direct and urgent. Print or project the key Scriptures. Ask participants to bring their Bibles.

Opening (10 minutes)

Icebreaker (optional): “When was the last time you tried to share your faith? What went well, or what made it difficult?”

Prayer: Ask the Lord to deepen our grasp of the gospel and give us boldness and clarity to share it with the people around us.

Key Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:1–4 (ESV)

“Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved… For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.”

Additional passages to read aloud (divide among the group):

• Romans 1:16–17 (the power of God for salvation)
• Romans 3:21–26 (justification by grace through faith)
• Ephesians 2:1–10 (dead in sin, saved by grace)
• Romans 6:14 (not under law but under grace)
• Mark 1:14–15 (repent and believe)
• 2 Corinthians 5:17–21 (ambassadors for Christ)

Core Teaching (15–20 minutes – Leader or rotate)

The gospel is not good advice, moral improvement, or religious rules. It is the good news of what God has done in Jesus Christ to save guilty sinners.

1. The Bad News – Our Condition
   All men have sinned and rebelled against a holy God (Rom. 3:23). Sin brings death, guilt, and God’s just wrath. We are spiritually dead and cannot save ourselves by trying harder or keeping rules.
2. The Good News – What God Has Done
   God sent His Son, Jesus Christ—fully God and fully man.
   • Christ lived the perfect life we never could.
   • Christ died for our sins on the cross, taking God’s wrath in our place.
   • He was buried and rose on the third day, conquering sin and death.
     This is “of first importance” (1 Cor. 15:3–4).
3. Our Response – Repentance and Faith
   The gospel calls us to turn from sin (repent) and trust in Christ alone (believe). When we do, we are forgiven, justified, and given new life.
   Important truth: Because of the gospel, we are not under the law but under grace (Romans 6:14). The law reveals our sin and shows us we cannot earn God’s favor by rule-keeping. The gospel frees us from the law’s curse and power so we now live by grace—accepted in Christ, not by performance.
4. How to Share the Gospel
   • Keep it simple: Bad news (sin & judgment) → Good news (Christ’s death & resurrection) → Response (repent & believe).
   • Explain we are not saved by keeping rules or being “good enough,” but by trusting what Christ has already done.
   • Use your own story: “I used to try to earn God’s approval… Here’s what changed when I believed the gospel.”
   • Ask questions: “Do you think a man can be right with God by trying to live a good life?”
   • Speak as a man to men—straightforward, honest, and confident.

Discussion Questions (25–30 minutes)

Go around the circle—encourage every man to answer at least once.

1. In your own words, what is the gospel? Why is it “of first importance”?
2. Why is it essential to start with the bad news? What happens if we skip it?
3. Read Romans 6:14. What does it mean that we are “not under the law but under grace”? How does this free us as men?
4. How does understanding we are not under the law keep us from turning the gospel into a new set of rules?
5. Share a time when the gospel felt real and powerful to you personally.
6. What holds men back from sharing the gospel? Role-play sharing it in 2 minutes with the guy next to you (include the freedom of not being under the law).

Application & Challenge for Men (10 minutes)

This Week’s Action Steps:

• Memorize 1 Corinthians 15:3–4 and Romans 6:14.
• Pray daily for one unbelieving man in your life.
• Share the gospel with at least one person this week—use the simple outline and mention the freedom of grace.
• Write out your 2-minute testimony, including how the gospel freed you from performance and law-keeping.

Men’s Commitment: “I believe the gospel is the power of God for salvation. Because I am not under the law but under grace, I will live it daily and share it boldly as a man saved by Christ alone.”

Closing Prayer (5–10 minutes)

Thank God for the gospel and for freeing us from the law. Confess any fear or apathy. Ask the Holy Spirit for courage and opportunities to proclaim it this week.
