The 5 Solas – Five Pillars Every Man Must Stand On

Men’s Bible Study: “The 5 Solas – Five Pillars Every Man Must Stand On”
Objective: To equip Christian men with the foundational truths of the Reformation—the Five Solas—so we can stand firm in a world full of compromise, false teaching, and self-centered religion. These are not dusty history lessons. They are battle cries for how a man is saved, how he lives, and how he leads his family and church with unshakeable confidence in God alone.
Opening Hook (10 minutes)
Ask the group:
- “If someone asked you, ‘How do you know you’re right with God?’ what would you say?”
- “Have you ever felt pressured to add something to the Gospel—like good works, church attendance, or personal effort—to be ‘good enough’?”
Read aloud: “We are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, as revealed in Scripture alone, all to the glory of God alone.”
This is the battle line. Men, we don’t negotiate these truths.
Main Teaching: The Five Solas (25-30 minutes)
1. Sola Scriptura – Scripture Alone
God’s Word is our only ultimate authority. Not tradition, not feelings, not culture, not popular preachers.
Key Verse: 2 Timothy 3:16-17
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” As men, this means we lead our homes by the Book—not by what “feels right” or what the world says. Scripture is sufficient.
2. Sola Fide – Faith Alone
We are justified (declared righteous) by faith alone in Christ. Not by works. Not by being a “good guy.”
Key Verse: Romans 3:28
“For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.”

This kills performance-based Christianity. A real man rests in Christ’s finished work instead of trusting his own résumé.
3. Sola Gratia – Grace Alone
Salvation is a free gift of God’s grace. We bring nothing to the table except our sin.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” Grace humbles us. It also empowers us to live holy lives—not out of guilt, but out of gratitude.
4. Solus Christus – Christ Alone
Jesus is the only Mediator between God and man. No saints, no priests, no self-help gurus—only Christ.

“And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

5. Soli Deo Gloria – Glory to God Alone
Everything exists for God’s glory—not ours, not the church’s, not our family’s legacy.
Key Verse: 1 Corinthians 10:31
“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
(See also Romans 11:36)This shapes our work, marriage, parenting, money, and ambitions. It’s not about building our kingdom.
Big Idea for Men: The Five Solas strip away every crutch and call us to radical, manly dependence on God. They free us from performance, fear, and cultural pressure so we can live with courage and conviction.
Discussion Questions (20-25 minutes)
- Which of the Five Solas challenges you the most right now, and why?
- Read 2 Timothy 3:16-17. How would your daily decisions change if you treated Scripture as your highest authority over every area of life (work, marriage, entertainment)?
- Many men secretly believe they need to “add” something to what Christ did. How does Sola Fide and Sola Gratia destroy that lie?
- As husbands and fathers: How can you teach your wife and children the truth of Solus Christus in practical ways?
- What would it look like this week to live Soli Deo Gloria in your job, your home, and your habits?
Application & Action Steps (10 minutes)
- This Week: Pick one Sola and memorize its key verse. Write it on a card and put it where you’ll see it daily (truck, mirror, desk).
- For Husbands: Lead your wife in reading one chapter of the Bible together this week and discuss how it points to Christ alone.
- For Fathers: Explain one of the Solas to your kids in simple language (use an object lesson—like “grace is like getting a gift you didn’t earn”).
- Accountability: Text your study partner one way you lived “God alone” this week.
- Challenge: Identify one area where you’ve been adding to the Gospel (tradition, performance, etc.) and repent.

Father, thank You for the clear truth of Your Word. Anchor us in Scripture alone. Justify us by faith alone through grace alone in Christ alone. May our entire lives shout Your glory alone. Make us men who stand firm, lead boldly, and pass these truths to the next generation. In the name of Jesus Christ, our only Savior, Amen.
