Objective

This study explores God’s design for men: our core purpose is to serve, and we fulfill leadership by serving others humbly, sacrificially, and courageously in every sphere—family, church, work, and community. True manhood mirrors Jesus, who led by becoming a servant.

Key Verse (Memory Verse):
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45, NIV)

Opening Prayer

Lord, thank You for calling us as men to lead by serving. Soften our hearts, humble our pride, and empower us by Your Spirit to follow Jesus’ example. In His name, Amen.

Icebreaker (10-15 minutes)

Share one example from your life (or a father/mentor) where someone led you well by serving first. How did that impact you?

Part 1: The Foundation – Created to Serve and Lead

God designed men with purpose from the beginning.

• Genesis 1:26-28; 2:15 – God created man in His image to rule (lead) over creation and to “work it and take care of it” (serve and cultivate).
• Joshua 24:15 – “But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Leadership starts with personal commitment and extends to the family.

Discussion Questions:

1. What does it mean that men are called both to “rule” and to “serve” the garden? How does this apply today?
2. In what ways have you seen cultural ideas of manhood (power, dominance, self-promotion) conflict with God’s design?

Part 2: Jesus – The Ultimate Servant Leader

Jesus redefines greatness.

Read Aloud:

• Mark 10:42-45 (and parallel in Matthew 20:25-28)
• John 13:3-17 (Jesus washing the disciples’ feet)
• Philippians 2:5-8 – Jesus, though equal with God, took the form of a servant and humbled Himself.

Key Truth: Worldly leadership lords power over others. Kingdom leadership empties self for others’ good. Greatness = servanthood.

Discussion Questions:

1. Why is it counter-cultural for men to lead by serving? What fears or pride keep us from this?
2. How does Jesus’ example in the foot-washing challenge your view of “manly” leadership?
3. Share a practical area (marriage, parenting, work) where you can apply “the first shall be last.”

Part 3: Serving by Leading in Key Areas of Life

Family (Home as Primary Ministry)

• Ephesians 5:25-29 – Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her.
• 1 Timothy 3:4-5 – A man must manage his own household well to be qualified for broader leadership.
• Deuteronomy 6:6-7 – Teach God’s commands diligently to your children.

Church & Community

• 1 Peter 5:2-4 – Shepherd God’s flock willingly, as examples, not domineering.
• Galatians 5:13 – “Serve one another humbly in love.”

Work & Daily Life

• Colossians 3:23-24 – Work heartily as for the Lord.
• 1 Peter 4:10 – Use your gifts to serve others.

Discussion Questions:

1. In your family, how can you lead by serving (e.g., sacrificial time, spiritual initiative, helping with daily burdens)?
2. What does servant leadership look like at work or in the church without compromising biblical headship?
3. Identify one specific action step this week in each sphere (home, church, work).

Part 4: Overcoming Barriers & Growing in Grace

Common struggles: pride, busyness, cultural pressure, past wounds, or fear of weakness.

Read:

• James 4:6-10 – God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
• 2 Corinthians 12:9 – His power is made perfect in weakness.

Practical Applications & Challenges:

• Daily: Start the day asking, “Who can I serve today as an act of leadership?”
• Marriage: Do one unexpected act of service for your wife this week without expecting anything back.
• Fatherhood: Lead family devotions or prayer time regularly.
• Accountability: Pair up with another man in the group for weekly check-ins.
• Prayer Focus: Ask God to break any selfish ambition and fill you with Christ-like love.

Discussion: Which barrier to servant leadership is strongest in your life right now? How can the group pray for and encourage you?

Closing: The Reward of Faithful Service

Serving by leading is not loss—it is the path to true greatness, joy, and God’s “Well done.” Jesus served to the point of the cross, and God exalted Him. As we serve, we reflect the image of God and bless those around us.

Father, make us men after Your heart—humble servants who lead boldly. Conform us to the image of Your Son. Empower us to serve our families, churches, and world for Your glory. Amen.
