Men’s Bible Study: Sanctification – Becoming the Men God Calls Us to Be

Leader’s Note:
This study is designed for a small group of men (8–12 recommended) meeting for 60–90 minutes. Focus on the biblical truth that sanctification is God’s ongoing work of making us holy after we are justified. Keep the tone direct and practical, encouraging men to speak honestly about sin, struggles, and growth. Print or project the key Scriptures. Ask participants to bring their Bibles.

Opening (10 minutes)

Icebreaker (optional): “What’s one habit or area in your life as a man where you know you need to grow in holiness—work, anger, purity, leadership at home?”

Prayer: Ask the Lord to show us the beauty and necessity of sanctification so we can walk in freedom and power as men who reflect Christ.

Key Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 4:3 & Romans 6:11–14 (ESV)

“For this is the will of God, your sanctification…” (1 Thess. 4:3)

“So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.” (Romans 6:11–14)

Additional passages to read aloud (divide among the group):

• Philippians 2:12–13 (work out your salvation – God works in you)
• 2 Corinthians 3:18 (being transformed into Christ’s image)
• Hebrews 12:14 (strive for holiness without which no one will see the Lord)
• 1 Peter 1:14–16 (be holy in all your conduct)
• Galatians 5:16–25 (walk by the Spirit and the fruit that follows)

Core Teaching (15–20 minutes – Leader or rotate)

Sanctification is the lifelong process by which God makes justified sinners into holy men who look more like Jesus. It is both God’s work and our responsibility.

1. God’s Work in Us
   We are already positionally holy in Christ (justified), but God is progressively making us holy in practice. He works in us “to will and to work for his good pleasure” (Phil. 2:13). The same power that raised Christ from the dead is at work in us (Eph. 1:19–20).
2. Our Responsibility – Fight Sin
   We are commanded to put sin to death (Col. 3:5) and present our bodies as instruments of righteousness (Rom. 6:13). This is not trying to earn God’s favor—it flows from the fact that we are already accepted in Christ.
3. The Battle is Real
   Sin no longer reigns over us, but it still wars against us. As men, we fight in areas like lust, anger, laziness, pride, and neglect of family. The gospel gives us real hope and power: we are dead to sin and alive to God.
4. The Goal of Sanctification
   To become men who are holy in all conduct (1 Pet. 1:15), who lead their homes with love and integrity, who walk in the Spirit, and who display the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (Gal. 5:22–23).

Discussion Questions (25–30 minutes)

Go around the circle—encourage every man to answer at least once.

1. Why is it important that sanctification is both God’s work and our effort? How does forgetting one or the other lead to problems?
2. Read Romans 6:11–14. What does it practically mean for you as a man to “consider yourselves dead to sin”? Give a real-life example.
3. In which area of your life (purity, marriage, fatherhood, work ethic, speech) do you most need to “put sin to death” right now?
4. How does knowing you are already justified free you to pursue sanctification without falling into legalism or performance?
5. As husbands and fathers: How can sanctification make you a better leader in your home? What does a sanctified man look like in daily family life?
6. Share one practical step you can take this week to “walk by the Spirit” and present your members to God as instruments of righteousness.

Application & Challenge for Men (10 minutes)

This Week’s Action Steps:

• Memorize Romans 6:11 or 1 Thessalonians 4:3.
• Identify one specific sin to fight this week. Share it with one brother in the group for accountability.
• Spend time daily in the Word and prayer asking God to continue His sanctifying work in you.
• Do one act of loving leadership in your home this week as an act of worship.

Men’s Commitment: “By God’s grace, I will pursue sanctification with all my heart. I will fight sin, walk in the Spirit, and strive to become the holy man God has called me to be—for His glory and for the good of my family.”

Closing Prayer (5–10 minutes)

Thank God for saving us and for continuing to make us holy. Confess specific sins as a group if appropriate. Ask Him to produce real fruit in our lives so we become men of integrity, courage, and Christlikeness.
