A Bible study for men on God's design for male leadership in families and churches. It examines creation order, husbands as heads, and church elders, showing the fruit of obedience and cost of abdication through Scripture and practical application.
Men’s Bible Study: “Leading the Way”
Purpose of this Study
This Bible study is written specifically for men. Its goal is simple: to call us back to the roles God designed us for in the family and in His church. When men step up and lead as God commands, good fruit grows; strong marriages flourish, faithful children thrive, healthy churches grow, and generational blessing abounds. When we fail to lead, someone else fills the vacuum: wives are forced to carry burdens they were never meant to carry, or unqualified/bad men step in and chaos follows. Scripture shows both the beauty of obedience and the pain of abdication. Let’s open God’s Word and examine what it says.
Opening Prayer
Icebreaker (5 minutes)
Share one word that describes the kind of man you want your sons (or the young men in this church) to become. Why that word?
1. God’s Design from the Beginning (Creation Order)
Key Passage: Genesis 2:7, 18-23; 1 Corinthians 11:3
- God formed Adam first, then created Eve as a “helper fit for him” (Gen. 2:18).
- Adam named the animals and named Eve. Headship was built into creation before the Fall.
- “The head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God” (1 Cor. 11:3).
Discussion Questions
- Why does the order of creation matter? What does it teach us about God’s intention for male leadership?
- How does culture today push back against this design? Where have you felt that pressure?
2. Leadership in the Family – The Husband as Head
Key Passage: Ephesians 5:22-33 (read aloud)
- Husbands are to love their wives “as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her” (v. 25).
- This is sacrificial, servant leadership—not tyranny or laziness.
- Wives are called to respect and submit “as to the Lord” (v. 22), but the passage puts the heaviest weight on the man.
The Fruit When Men Lead Well
- Peace and order in the home (Colossians 3:18-21).
- Children who see the gospel lived out and are trained in the fear of the Lord.
- Wives who are cherished, protected, and freed to flourish in their own God-given design.
The Cost When Men Fail to Lead
Look at Genesis 3:1-6, 17. The serpent approached Eve first. Adam was right there with her (“with her” v. 6) but said nothing. He abdicated. Result?
- Sin entered the world.
- Eve was deceived and took initiative God never gave her.
- Adam was judged for listening to his wife instead of obeying God (Gen. 3:17).
- The whole family suffered.
Modern Parallel
When men check out (spiritually, emotionally, or physically), wives often step into the leadership vacuum out of necessity. Or a “bad man” (a domineering outsider, rebellious son, or a false teacher) steps in and damage follows. The fruit is anxiety, resentment, confused children, and broken homes.
Discussion Questions
1. In your own home right now, are you actively leading spiritually (prayer, Scripture, decisions)? Be honest.
2. What specific ways can you love your wife “as Christ loved the church” this week?
3. Leadership in the Church – Men as Elders and Overseers (the call for all men)
Key Passages: 1 Timothy 2:8-15; 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9
- Paul instructs men to pray lifting holy hands (2:8).
- He restricts the office of elder/overseer and the authoritative teaching role to qualified men (3:1-7).
- Elders must be “the husband of one wife,” able to manage their households well—because family leadership is the training ground for church leadership.
- The church is God’s household (1 Tim. 3:15). Order matters.
The Fruit When Men Lead Well
- Sound doctrine is guarded.
- The church is protected from wolves.
- Women and children are discipled and flourish under godly male covering.
- Generational faithfulness (see the pattern in 2 Timothy 1:5 with Timothy’s grandmother and mother, yet Paul mentors the young man).
The Cost When Men Fail to Lead
Revelation 2:20 – In the church at Thyatira, the men allowed “that woman Jezebel” to teach and seduce the church into immorality and idolatry. The men were rebuked for tolerating it. False teaching, moral compromise, and judgment followed.
When good men remain silent or unqualified men, effeminate men, or women, seize power, the church becomes weak, divided, or worldly.

1. What does it look like for men in this group to “lead the way” in our local church and in our homes?
2. Where have you seen the painful fruit of men stepping back in a church/home setting?
4. The Challenge: Step Up

Joshua 24:15 – “But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Practical Application Steps (choose one to commit to this week)
- Lead your family in prayer and Bible reading at least 4 times this week.
- Have a direct conversation with your wife about how you can better serve and lead her.
- If you are not already, begin discipling one younger man in the church. (go, make disciples)
- Repent of any area where you have been passive and ask God for courage.
Closing Prayer (men stand and pray for one another)
Pray by name for each man present. Ask God to raise up a generation of men who will lead their families and this church without apology, for the glory of Christ and the good of those we love.
Take-Home Challenge
This week, read the book of 1 Timothy straight through in one sitting. Ask God to show you where He is calling you to lead.
Final Word
Brothers, God did not give us these roles because we are superior—He gave them because He is sovereign and His design works. When we embrace them, fruit grows. When we abandon them, others suffer. The choice is ours. Let’s lead the way.
