An introduction to a Bible study on male leadership in the home and church. Designed for men who want to understand their God-given role as protectors and leaders of their families and congregations, using the metaphor of a sheepdog guarding the flock.
Introduction for Men’s Bible Study: “Leading the Way”
Brothers, gather close.
Imagine a sheepdog on the hillside. He doesn’t wander off chasing his own desires. He doesn’t curl up and sleep while the wolves circle. He stands alert between the flock and the danger. He runs ahead to lead them to green pasture and still water. He circles back to gather the stragglers. He protects, guides, corrects, and sacrifices for the sheep entrusted to him. That is the picture of a man after God’s own heart, an overseer, a leader, a protector of his flock…. And an example to the young sheepdogs watching.
This morning we’re doing a study called “Leading the Way.” This isn’t a soft or feel-good study. This is a call back to the high and holy role God has given every man in this room: to be a sheepdog for his family and for God’s church.
From the very beginning, God designed men to lead. He formed Adam, then gave Eve to him as a helper. He placed the weight of headship on the man’s shoulders before sin ever entered the world. That design has never changed. Christ is the head of man, man is the head of his wife, and together they are to raise children who fear the Lord and build God’s church to stand firm.
When we step up and lead as God commands, the fruit is beautiful: strong marriages, faithful sons and daughters, protected wives, and churches that guard sound doctrine and shine like lights in a crooked generation. But when we shrink back, when we stay silent, passive, distracted, or selfish, the vacuum doesn’t stay empty. Wives carry burdens they were never meant to carry. Children grow up confused and untethered. False teachers, rebellious voices, and worldly ideas rush in. We see the painful results in broken homes and weak effeminate churches all around us.
This study is for men who refuse to let that happen on our watch.
We will open God’s Word and look straight at the creation order, at sacrificial leadership in the home, at the qualifications and calling of all men in the church, especially elders or overseers, and at the high cost of abdication (when a king gives up authority). We will celebrate the beauty of obedience and confront the damage of passivity. And by God’s grace, we will leave here more determined to lead our families and the church without apology.
So let’s begin like men who know who they are in Christ.
