Men’s Bible Study: Free Will and God’s Will — Choose This Day

Objective: Understand the biblical tension between our God-given free will and God’s sovereign will. As men, we have the daily power and responsibility to choose to become the man God created us to be — or to walk away and suffer the consequences. God loves us enough to let us choose, but He holds us accountable.

Opening (approx. 10 minutes)

Leader reads aloud: “Men, God created you with free will. He didn’t make robots. Every single morning you wake up with a real choice: Will I be the man God designed me to be, or will I go my own way? You can choose to lead your family, fight sin, work hard with integrity, love your wife, and follow Christ — or you can choose laziness, anger, lust, selfishness, and self-destruction. God is sovereign over all things, yet He is not responsible for your sin. You are. Because He loves you, God allows you the dignity of choice — even the choice to reject Him and face eternal consequences. But He also calls you every day to choose life, choose obedience, and choose to walk in His will. Today we’re going to see what Scripture says about this daily decision and how a real man lives it out.”

Icebreaker Question (1–2 minutes each):
What’s one area of your life right now where you feel the daily battle between choosing God’s way and choosing your own way?

Key Verse to Read Aloud (group reads together):

“I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live.” (Deuteronomy 30:19, ESV)

Main Teaching / Scripture Study (20–25 minutes)

1. God Gave You Free Will
Read: Deuteronomy 30:15-20, Joshua 24:14-15

• God sets before every man a clear choice: life or death, blessing or curse, Him or false gods.
• “Choose this day whom you will serve.”

2. You Choose Daily — You Become the Man You Choose to Be
Read: Romans 12:1-2, Galatians 5:16-25, Ephesians 5:15-17

• Every day you present your body as a living sacrifice or you live for yourself.
• Walk by the Spirit (God’s will) or gratify the desires of the flesh (your will).
• God’s will for you is clear: sanctification, holiness, loving leadership, hard work, integrity.

3. The Sobering Reality of Choice and Consequences
Read: Romans 6:23, James 1:13-15, Ezekiel 18:20

• The wages of sin is death — physical and eternal.
• God does not tempt or force anyone to sin. We choose it, and we bear the responsibility.
• Hell is real for those who persistently choose self over God.

4. God’s Sovereignty and Love
Read: John 3:16, Philippians 2:12-13, Romans 8:28-29

• God loves you so much He gave His Son and gave you the freedom to accept or reject Him.
• He is sovereign and works in you, but you must “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.”
• God is not the author of your sin — you are. But He is faithful to forgive when we repent and return.

Core Truths for Men:

1. Free will is both a gift and a responsibility.
2. God’s will is not a mystery — it is obedience, day by day.
3. You cannot blame God, your past, or anyone else for your choices.
4. The man God made you to be is found in daily surrender to Christ.

Discussion Questions (25–35 minutes)

1. Where in your life (marriage, work, purity, anger, time) do you most clearly see the daily choice between your will and God’s will?
2. How does knowing God gave you free will make your daily decisions more serious and meaningful?
3. Read Philippians 2:12-13. How do God’s sovereignty and our responsibility work together?
4. What practical things help you choose God’s way when you wake up each morning?
5. How can we, as men, encourage one another to keep choosing life instead of drifting toward sin and its consequences?

Application / Action Steps (10 minutes)

Choose one this week:

• Start each morning with this prayer: “Lord, today I choose You. Help me be the man You created me to be. Not my will, but Yours.”
• Identify one area where you’ve been choosing self over God and take one concrete step of repentance this week.
• Memorize Deuteronomy 30:19 or Joshua 24:15.
• Share with your wife or a brother one specific way you want to choose God’s will daily.
• Read one chapter of Proverbs each day and ask, “What is God calling me to choose today?”

Challenge: Text a brother every morning this week with one sentence: “Today I choose _________ (to lead my family / fight lust / work with integrity / etc.).”

Closing Prayer (COP)

Gather in a circle. Thank God for the gift of free will and His incredible love. Confess the times we have chosen sin and self. Ask Him to strengthen each man here to choose life every single day. Pray for courage to be the men God created us to be — for our families, our churches, and His glory. Commit together: “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Takeaway:
Every morning you have a choice. God will not force you. Choose to be the man He made you to be. Walk in His will. Live for His glory. The consequences of your choices are eternal — choose life.
