Men’s Bible Study: Deciding Who We Are – Not Finding, But Choosing in Christ

Opening Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for creating us as men with purpose. In a world that tells us to “find ourselves,” help us see that true identity is rooted in You and shaped by the daily choices we make to follow Christ. Open our hearts to Your Word tonight. Amen.

Introduction (10-15 minutes) - Many men today chase the idea of “finding themselves” – through career success, adventure, relationships, or self-discovery journeys. Culture says identity is something hidden inside you to uncover, like a personal brand or authentic self. But Scripture paints a different picture. God doesn’t call us to wander in search of who we are. He calls us to decide who we will be – by choosing Him, renewing our minds, and stepping into the identity He has already declared over us in Christ. We are not self-made; we are God-made and Christ-redeemed. Our role is to agree with God’s declaration and live it out through obedient choices.

Key Verse for the Study:
“Choose this day whom you will serve… But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15 ESV)

Core Teaching: Identity Is Decided, Not Discovered

1. God Defines Our Foundation
   We don’t invent our core identity; God gives it.
   • Genesis 1:27: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”
   • Psalm 139:13-14: “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

As men, this includes strength, leadership, provision, and protection – but these are stewarded under God’s design, not for our own glory.

1. In Christ, We Become a New Creation
   The old “me” dies; the new man is chosen and called to decide daily to walk in it.
   • 2 Corinthians 5:17: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
   • Galatians 2:20: “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.”
   • Ephesians 4:22-24: “Put off your old self… and put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”
2. Daily Decisions Shape Who We Become
   Identity solidifies through repeated choices:
   • Joshua 24:15 – Choose whom you will serve.
   • Romans 12:2: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…”
   • Proverbs 4:23: “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.”

Modern “find yourself” thinking often leads to selfishness or confusion. Biblical manhood decides: “I will be a man of integrity, courage, humility, and faithfulness – because Christ is.”

In Christ, You Are (Declare These Truths Together):

• Chosen and dearly loved (Ephesians 1:4-5; Colossians 3:12)
• A new creation and God’s workmanship (2 Corinthians 5:17; Ephesians 2:10)
• A son of God and co-heir with Christ (Romans 8:15-17)
• Called to lead, serve, and stand firm (1 Corinthians 16:13)
• Equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:17)

Discussion Questions (20-30 minutes)

Break into small groups of 3-5 men.

1. Where in your life have you been trying to “find yourself” instead of deciding to follow Christ’s definition? What pressures (work, culture, past failures) make this tempting?
2. Read Joshua 24:15 and Ephesians 4:22-24. What practical daily choices can you make this week to “put off the old self” and walk in your new identity?
3. As men, how does deciding your identity in Christ affect your roles as husbands, fathers, leaders, or friends? Share a specific example.
4. Which “In Christ” truth from above is hardest for you to believe right now? Why? How can the group encourage you?
5. How can we hold each other accountable to renew our minds instead of drifting with culture?

Personal Application & Challenge (10 minutes)

This week:

• Memorize one identity verse (e.g., 2 Corinthians 5:17 or Ephesians 2:10).
• Make one deliberate decision each day that aligns with who God says you are (e.g., integrity at work, courage in conversation, humility at home).
• Journal: “Today I choose to be [specific trait] because I am [Scripture truth].”

Men, stop searching and start standing. Your identity isn’t lost – it’s been given. Decide today to live like it.

Closing Prayer - Pray in pairs or as a group: Thank God for your identity in Christ. Confess areas of drifting. Ask for strength to choose Him daily. Commit to being men who lead their families and communities by deciding for Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
