Brotherly Love – How a Man Loves His Brothers and Others
A Bible study on brotherly love for Christian men, exploring how to love other believers sacrificially and genuinely as Christ loved us. Uses Romans, John, and 1 John to challenge men beyond independence toward deep family-like connection and practical service.
Men’s Bible Study: Brotherly Love – How a Man Loves His Brothers and Others
Opening Prayer
Father, thank You for calling us into Your family through Jesus Christ. As men, we often focus on strength, leadership, and independence—but You call us to a deeper bond of brotherly love. Open our hearts tonight to Your Word. Teach us to love one another with genuine affection, sacrifice, and action, just as Christ loved us. Help us extend that love beyond our group to a hurting world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Icebreaker (5-10 minutes)
Think of a time when another man (a friend, mentor, or brother in Christ) showed you real brotherly love—something that felt like family. How did it impact you? Or, share one area where you struggle to show love to other men (pride, competition, busyness?).
Key Passages
- Romans 12:9-10 (ESV)
“Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.” - John 13:34-35 (NIV)
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” - 1 John 3:16-18 (NIV)
“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”
Main Theme: Brotherly Love Is the Mark of Real Men in Christ
In the Bible, “brotherly love” (Greek: philadelphia) goes beyond polite friendship. It’s the warm, devoted affection of family—treating other believers as blood brothers. Jesus raised the bar: we love “as I have loved you”—sacrificially. The world notices when men in the church love this way. It proves we belong to Him.1. What Brotherly Love Looks Like – Genuine, Affectionate, and Honorable (Romans 12:9-10)
- Genuine love: Not fake or performative. It hates evil and clings to good.
- Brotherly affection: Warm, family-like devotion. Men aren’t called to be stoic loners—we’re called to real connection.
- Outdo one another in showing honor: Compete in lifting others up instead of competing for status. Give preference to your brother.
Discussion Questions:
- Why is it sometimes harder for men to show affection or honor to other men than to compete with them?
- In what practical ways can we “outdo one another in showing honor” in this group or at church (e.g., listening well, celebrating each other’s wins, giving credit)?
2. The Standard: Love as Christ Loved Us – Sacrificial and Active (John 13:34-35 & 1 John 3:16-18)
Jesus didn’t just teach love—He demonstrated it by laying down His life.
Brotherly love means:
- Willingness to sacrifice time, comfort, resources, or even reputation for a brother.
- Meeting real needs: If you see a brother struggling financially, emotionally, or spiritually, don’t just say “I’ll pray for you”—act.
- Actions over words: Love isn’t feelings or nice talk. It’s deeds done in truth.
This love extends beyond the church family to “others” (neighbors, coworkers, the lost). But it starts with our brothers—because how we treat the family of God reveals our love for God (1 John 4:20-21).
Discussion Questions:
- Read 1 John 3:16-18 slowly. Where in your life right now could you “lay down your life” (sacrifice something) for a brother? Be specific.
- How does sacrificial love differ from the “tough guy” image many men grow up with? How can both coexist in godly manhood?
- Share an example of how loving your brothers well could influence unbelievers around you (family, workplace, gym).
3. Practical Ways Men Show Brotherly Love
- Bear burdens (Galatians 6:2): Help a brother through job loss, marriage struggles, or addiction by listening, praying, and taking action.
- Serve quietly: Mow a widowed brother’s lawn, mentor a younger man, or provide a meal during hardship.
- Speak truth in love: Confront sin gently but firmly, and encourage growth.
- Show hospitality and kindness: Invite brothers into your home. Be tenderhearted and courteous (1 Peter 3:8).
- Forgive and honor: Let go of offenses quickly. Prefer others above yourself.
- To others outside the faith: Show the same love through generosity, integrity, and sharing the gospel.
Discussion Questions:
- Pick one practical step from above. What is one concrete action you will take this week to love a brother (or someone else) better?
- How can our group build stronger brotherly love (accountability partners, prayer chains, serving together)?
Closing Challenge
This week, treat every man in Christ as your brother. Look for one need you can meet with action, not just words. Outdo someone in honor. Remember: the strongest men are those secure enough in Christ to love sacrificially. When we do this, the world sees Jesus in us.
Memory Verse
“Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.” – Romans 12:10 (ESV)
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You for making us brothers through the blood of Jesus. Forgive us for selfish independence or shallow relationships. Fill us with Your love so we can love one another deeply—from the heart, with sacrifice, and in truth. Make our group a picture of Christ’s love to a watching world. Strengthen us as men to lead in this. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
