Born to Lead – You Are the Pastor, Elder, and Shepherd of Your Family
A men's Bible study on family leadership grounded in creation order and Christ's example. Teaches that God designed men as spiritual leaders and pastors of their households, with practical steps for leading through sacrificial love, submission to God, and daily discipleship of wife and children.
Men’s Bible Study: Born to Lead – You Are the Pastor, Elder, and Shepherd of Your Family
Men only. Straight talk. 60–90 minutes. Bring your Bible, notebook, and ownership. No excuses, no outsourcing.
Goal: Understand that God designed men as leaders from creation. You don’t choose whether to lead—only how. Your family is your church. Your home is your primary mission field. You are called to pastor your wife and children through Christ-like headship: following Jesus, submitting to God, and living selflessly.
Opening Prayer (read together):
“Father, You made us men to lead. Forgive us for passivity or selfish leadership. Teach us to follow Christ so our families can follow us well. Make us faithful shepherds of the flocks You’ve given us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
1. God Made Men Leaders from the Beginning
Leadership is not a skill you earn or a role you opt into. It is wired into male design.
- Genesis 2:7, 15-18, 21-23 – God created Adam first, gave him the garden to tend, the command about the tree, then created Eve as his helper. Creation order establishes headship (see 1 Corinthians 11:3, 8-9).
- Genesis 3:6, 16-19 – When Adam failed to lead, sin entered. God held Adam responsible even though Eve ate first. The curse didn’t remove male headship—it made it harder.
- 1 Corinthians 11:3 – “The head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.” This is creation reality, not culture.
Truth: Every man leads. Your wife and children will follow you—into godliness or sin, stability or chaos, faith or drift. You cannot abdicate. You can only choose good or bad leadership.
2. You Are the Pastor and Elder of Your Family
The Bible calls you to spiritual oversight of your household.
- Ephesians 5:23 – “For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.”
- 1 Timothy 3:4-5 – Elder qualifications: “He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church?” Family leadership is the training ground and prerequisite for any broader church leadership.
- 1 Peter 5:1-3 – Elders shepherd the flock willingly, not domineering, but as examples. You do this first at home.
Your church = your family.
Your mission field = your home.
Your saints to equip = your wife and kids (Ephesians 4:11-13 applied first to the household).
Deuteronomy 6:6-9 – These commands were given to fathers: “You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house…”
Proverbs 22:6 – “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
Ephesians 6:4 – “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”
You pastor them by teaching Scripture, modeling prayer and repentance, protecting them from false teaching, and leading family worship.
3. Families Follow Where Men Lead – Good or Bad
- Joshua 24:15 – “Choose this day whom you will serve… But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” One man’s decision shaped his entire household.
- Your leadership is contagious. Passive or selfish men produce drifting or wounded families. Christ-following men produce legacy families that fear the Lord.
You don’t get to vote on headship. God assigned it. The only question is whether you will lead like Adam (failed) or like Christ (sacrificial).
4. How Men Lead Well: Follow Christ → Submit to God → Live Selflessly
True masculine leadership is not bossy or macho. It is Christ-like.
- Ephesians 5:25-28 – “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her… In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies.” Selfless, sacrificial, sanctifying love.
- Philippians 2:5-8 – Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who… emptied himself… became obedient to the point of death. Lead through submission to the Father.
- Matthew 20:28 – “The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve.” Servant headship.
- Galatians 2:20 – “It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.” The best leaders die daily to self and follow Jesus.
Lead through following. Submit upward so your family can follow you safely. Put their good above your comfort.
5. Practical Application: Step Into Your God-Given Role This Week
Action Steps (choose and commit to at least two):
- Start daily family worship (even 10 minutes): Read Scripture, pray, discuss.
- Have a “leadership reset” talk with your wife: Ask her where she needs you to lead better and listen humbly.
- Take one evening this week and disciple one of your children one-on-one—Bible, prayer, life talk.
- Identify one area of passivity or selfishness and repent to God and your family.
- Memorize and live Ephesians 5:25 this week.
Discussion Questions (honest, no shallow answers):
- Where in your life have you tried to deny or avoid leadership? What happened?
- Read Ephesians 5:23-33. How does Christ’s example change how you see “headship”?
- In what ways are your wife and kids currently following your lead (good or bad)? Be specific.
- How does “lead through submission to God” look different from worldly ideas of being “the boss”?
- What is one concrete way you will pastor your family this week? Name it out loud and commit.
Closing Prayer (men pray for each other by name):
Thank God for designing you to lead. Repent of passivity or pride. Ask for grace to follow Christ so your family follows well. Commit your home as your church and mission field.
Memory Verse:
“Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” (Ephesians 5:25)
Brothers, you were born for this. Lead well. Your family is counting on it—whether they say it or not. Follow Jesus hard, and they will follow you into life. Go do it.
