Opening Prayer (5 minutes)
Leader: "Lord Jesus, You called ordinary men to follow You and change the world. Help us today to hear Your voice clearly, lay down our excuses, and say a wholehearted 'Yes' to whatever You ask. Make us the men You created us to be—strong in faith, bold in obedience, and faithful in our daily calls. In Your name, Amen."
Icebreaker Question (5-7 minutes)
Share briefly: "What's one time in your life when saying 'yes' to something hard (a job, relationship, or challenge) ended up shaping who you became? Or, what's one area right now where you're tempted to say 'no' to God?"
Main Teaching: What It Means to Be a "Yes Man" for Jesus
Jesus doesn't call us to a comfortable, half-hearted faith. He calls men to deny themselves, take up their cross daily, and follow Him (Luke 9:23). Being a "Yes Man" for Jesus means:
- Answering the call when God speaks—whether it's big (like leaving comfort) or small (loving your wife when it's hard, leading your kids, serving at church, or sharing the gospel).
- Becoming the man Christ made us to be: Not the version shaped by culture, fear, or past failures, but the redeemed, Spirit-empowered man who lives with purpose, integrity, and courage.
- Living it out daily: Our "yes" isn't a one-time event; it's a lifestyle of obedience that honors God and impacts our families, workplaces, and communities.
The Bible is full of men who said "yes" (or learned to) and men who hesitated. Their stories show that God uses imperfect men who simply make themselves available.
Key Verse to Memorize:
"Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?' And I said, 'Here am I. Send me!'" (Isaiah 6:8, NIV)
Other powerful verses:
- 2 Corinthians 1:20 – All God's promises are "Yes" in Christ, and our response is "Amen" (our yes) to His glory.
- Matthew 4:19-20 – Jesus calls fishermen: "'Come, follow me,' Jesus said, 'and I will send you out to fishers of men.' Yes. At once they left their nets and followed him."
- Luke 9:62 – "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."
Biblical Examples: Men Who Said "Yes" (15-20 minutes)
Discuss these stories in your group. What excuses did they have? How did God use their "yes"?
- Abraham (Genesis 12:1-4; 22:1-18)
God called him to leave his homeland and later to sacrifice his promised son Isaac. Abraham said "Here I am" and obeyed. He became the father of nations and the model of faith.
Lesson for men: Your "yes" might cost comfort or require radical trust, but it builds legacy for your family. - Moses (Exodus 3:1-4:17)
A murderer and fugitive, he made excuses ("Who am I?" "I can't speak well"). Yet when God called him to lead Israel out of slavery, he ultimately said yes. God used a reluctant man powerfully.
Lesson for men: God doesn't call the qualified—He qualifies the called. Your past doesn't disqualify you. - Isaiah (Isaiah 6:1-8)
After seeing God's holiness, Isaiah responded immediately: "Here am I. Send me!"
Lesson for men: True worship leads to readiness. When you encounter God's greatness, "yes" becomes natural. - Peter and the Disciples (Matthew 4:18-22; John 21:15-19)
Fishermen dropped everything "at once." Peter failed (denied Jesus) but was restored and said yes again—feeding Christ's sheep and leading the early church.
Lesson for men: Failure isn't final. Jesus restores and recommission men who return with a "yes." - Paul (Acts 9:1-19; Philippians 3:7-14)
Former persecutor who said yes to a dramatic call on the Damascus road. He counted everything as loss for Christ and pressed on toward the goal.
Lesson for men: No one is too far gone. A "yes" to Jesus reorients your entire life.
Contrast with the rich young ruler (Mark 10:17-22), who walked away sad because he couldn't say yes to selling everything and following Jesus.
Group Discussion Questions:
- Which of these men's stories hits closest to home for you right now? Why?
- What excuses do men today commonly give for not fully saying "yes" to Jesus (e.g., busyness, fear of failure, cultural pressure)?
- How does saying "yes" to Christ make us better husbands, fathers, workers, and friends? (See Ephesians 5:25-33 for husbands; Ephesians 6:4 for fathers.)
Application: Living Out the Call as a Man (10-15 minutes)
Jesus made you to be a man who leads courageously, loves sacrificially, works diligently, and stands firm (1 Corinthians 16:13 – "Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong").
Practical ways to be a "Yes Man":
- Daily surrender: Start each morning with "Here I am, Lord—use me today."
- In your home: Say yes to loving your wife as Christ loved the church (even when tired), discipling your kids, and leading family devotions.
- At work: Say yes to integrity, excellence, and witnessing when opportunities arise.
- In the church: Say yes to serving, mentoring younger men, or stepping into leadership.
- In trials: Say yes to trusting God instead of numbing out or quitting.
Personal Challenge: This week, identify one specific "call" from God (through Scripture, prayer, or circumstances) and say yes to it. Write it down and share with the group next time for accountability.
Action Step:
- Read Luke 9:23-27 and journal: What does "denying yourself" look like for me this week?
- Pray daily: "Lord, make me a yes man for You."
Closing Prayer and Commitment (5 minutes)
Leader or group: Pray for each man by name, asking God to give courage, remove excuses, and empower obedience through the Holy Spirit.
End with a group declaration (repeat after leader): "I am the man Christ made me to be. Today and every day, I choose to say 'Yes' to Jesus. Here I am—send me!"
