Bible Study for Men: Becoming the Biblical Husband God Calls You to Be

Purpose - This follow-up study is written just for you—husbands who desire to walk out the high and beautiful calling God has placed on you as a biblical husband. Building on the couples’ study, this is a space for honest self-reflection, prayer, and personal growth before the Lord. We will focus on how to lead sacrificially without controlling or being harsh, how to love and cherish your wife, how to honor and respect her, how to show affection and pursue intimacy, and how to disciple your wife through your example and loving leadership, never by demanding, lecturing, or pressuring her. Everything we do flows from our faith in Christ, not from whether our wife is “getting it right.” Your obedience to God’s design brings freedom, joy, and blessing, even in imperfect marriages. Marriage is a picture of Christ and the church, and your role as head is one of responsibility and sacrifice (Ephesians 5:25).

Suggested Format

  • For a men’s small group, one-on-one with a mentor, or personal quiet time.
  • 45–60 minutes per session (4 sessions).
  • Begin with prayer and a moment of gratitude for your wife (even if hard).
  • Read Scripture aloud. Journal your honest answers. Share only what you’re comfortable sharing.
  • End every session by praying for your wife and for your own heart.
  • Keep a personal notebook: “My Walk as Her Husband.”

Opening Prayer: Pray that God opens our eyes to see ourselves in the mirror and change you.

Core Scripture (Read at the start of every session):
Ephesians 5:25-29, 33 (NIV)
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her… 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church… 33 …and the wife must respect her husband.

Supporting Verses (keep these open):

  • 1 Peter 3:7
  • Colossians 3:19
  • 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
  • Philippians 2:3-8
  • Proverbs 31:23, 28-29 (a husband’s praise)

Session 1: Leading Sacrificially Without Controlling

God has given you the role of headship. Your calling is to lead with humility and sacrifice—never with harshness, demands, or selfish control (Colossians 3:19).

Discussion & Self-Reflection:

  1. In what areas of life (decisions, home, finances, parenting, spiritual direction) do I sometimes lead with control instead of sacrificial love? What fears or habits drive that?
  2. How does Ephesians 5:25 (“gave himself up for her”) describe my leadership? What changes if I see headship this way?
  3. When have I seen the blessing of choosing servant leadership even when it was hard?

Self-Challenge:
I will examine my own heart first. I will pray before I decide or speak, asking, “Lord, is this loving leadership or control?” I will practice leading in one area this week by serving rather than directing.

Practical Step: Choose one decision or responsibility this week and lead it by first asking for your wife’s input, then making the call with her good in mind. Serve her in the process without expecting thanks. Journal what God showed you.

Prayer: Lord, help me lead like Christ—humbly, sacrificially, and without harshness.

Session 2: Loving, Cherishing, and Honoring Your Wife

Biblical love is active, cherishing, and honoring. Your wife flourishes when she feels deeply valued and protected by you (Ephesians 5:28-29).

Discussion & Self-Reflection:

  1. How do I currently show love, honor, and cherishing? Where have I grown distant, critical, or neglectful?
  2. 1 Peter 3:7 calls me to live with my wife “in an understanding way” and treat her with honor as a co-heir. Where do I need to grow in this?
  3. How does honoring my wife—even when she is imperfect—honor God and strengthen our marriage?

Self-Challenge:
I will cherish my wife as my own body. I will speak honorably about her to others and in my own heart. I will replace criticism with words and actions that build her up.

Practical Step: This week, speak three specific words of honor or cherishing to your wife daily (publicly and privately). Examples: “I’m grateful God gave me you,” “You are a blessing to our family,” “I honor the way you…” Notice how it affects your own heart.

Prayer: Father, fill me with Your love so I can cherish and honor my wife consistently.

Session 3: Showing Affection and Pursuing Intimacy

God designed you to initiate love, affection, and intimacy that makes your wife feel safe, desired, and valued. This is part of nourishing and cherishing her.

Discussion & Self-Reflection:

  1. How consistent am I in showing physical, emotional, and verbal affection? Where have I withheld or made intimacy transactional?
  2. How does 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 shape the way I pursue my wife?
  3. What would it look like for affection and intimacy to flow from my walk with Christ rather than from my feelings or her performance?

Self-Challenge:
I will pursue my wife with affection and intimacy as an act of sacrificial love and worship to Jesus, not as a reward or demand. I will lead gently and patiently in this area.

Practical Step: Each day this week, intentionally initiate affection in one meaningful way (a loving touch, extended conversation, date planning, or physical intimacy with her comfort in mind). Do it because Christ loved you first.

Prayer: Lord, make me a husband who pursues my wife’s heart and body with tenderness and consistency.

Session 4: Discipling Your Wife Through Loving Leadership and Example

You are called to disciple and sanctify your wife by your own Christ-like life and gentle leadership—not by lecturing, correcting, or pressuring her to change (Ephesians 5:26-27).

Discussion & Self-Reflection:

  1. Where have I tried to disciple my wife by telling her what to do or pointing out her shortcomings? How did that affect our relationship?
  2. How can I “wash her with the word” through my own example, prayer, and loving leadership rather than words of correction?
  3. What would it look like to disciple her by becoming more like Christ myself and respecting her as my partner?

Self-Challenge:
I will disciple my wife by my daily walk with Jesus. I will pray for her daily, lead spiritually with humility, speak life over her, and trust the Holy Spirit to work in her heart. I will respect her as a co-heir and never demand her submission.

Practical Step:

  • Start a daily “Wife Prayer List” and pray specifically for her walk with God.
  • This week, share one encouraging observation about her character or efforts with no suggestions attached.
  • When tempted to correct, pause and pray first: “Lord, help me lead by example and love her into growth.”

Prayer: Lord, make me a husband whose life preaches louder than my words. Teach me to lead and disciple with grace and strength.

Closing Challenge
You are not called to be perfect—you are called to be faithful. Your obedience as a biblical husband is an act of worship that brings joy, peace, and the reward of walking with Jesus. Keep returning to this study. Share what God is doing with a trusted brother for prayer and accountability. Your marriage may not change overnight, but you will—and that changes everything.

Memory Verse for the Month:
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” — Ephesians 5:25

Final Prayer (Pray this over yourself):
Heavenly Father, make me the husband You designed me to be. Teach me to lead sacrificially, love deeply, honor faithfully, show affection consistently, and disciple through my example. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Go walk in grace, brother. Your faithful, Christ-like leadership is powerful in the eyes of God and a gift to your wife and family.
