The Patience of Christ
You lose your patience with your kids. You snap at your wife when you are tired. You get short with the guy at church who always asks the same question. You know you should be more patient, and you hate that you are not. But here is the thing: your patience is not the foundation. His is. Christ has been patient with you for longer than you have been alive, and He is not done yet.

Christ promises to keep those who have kept His word of patient endurance through the hour of trial coming on the whole world.
- 2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slow to fulfill His promise but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish.
- Romans 2:4
God's kindness and patience are meant to lead you to repentance, not to be taken for granted.
Guidance
The risen Christ tells the church at Philadelphia that because they have kept His word of patient endurance, He will keep them. Notice the order. His patience holds yours. You are able to endure because He has endured with you. He has been patient with your failures, your slow growth, your repeated sins. He has not given up on you. That patience is not passive. It is active, purposeful, kind. It is meant to lead you to repentance, to shape you into the man He is making you. When you lose your patience this week, and you will, remember that His patience with you has not run out. Confess it. Receive His forgiveness. Get back up. The call is not to be perfect. The call is to keep turning back to the One who is patient with you, and to let His patience shape the way you treat the people around you. You will be more patient with your kids when you remember how patient He has been with you. You will be kinder to your wife when you remember how kind He has been to you. His patience is the well you draw from. Go back to it as often as you need to.
Notes from the Watch
I lost my patience with my son last week over something small. I apologized later. He forgave me faster than I forgave myself. That is grace. That is what Christ does with us every day. He is patient, and He is making us patient, one failure and one forgiveness at a time. Do not give up on yourself. He has not given up on you.

When you lose your patience this week, stop and confess it to God immediately. Receive His forgiveness and extend that same patience to the person in front of you.
