The Temptation to Quit

You have thought about it. Walking away. Starting over. Burning it down and doing something else. Maybe the thought comes on Sunday night. Maybe it comes at 2 p.m. on a Tuesday when the meeting will not end. The temptation to quit is real. Sometimes quitting is the right move. But most of the time, the urge to quit is not about the work. It is about something deeper. This week we look at what is under the urge to walk away.

Scriptures
  • Hebrews 12:1-3

The writer commands us to run with endurance, fixing our eyes on Jesus, who endured the cross for the joy set before him, which shows that endurance is fueled by looking at Christ.

  • James 1:2-4

James tells us to count trials as joy because testing produces steadfastness, and steadfastness makes us complete, which means hard work is forming something in us we cannot see yet.

  • Ecclesiastes 9:10

The Preacher commands us to do whatever our hand finds to do with all our might, because there is no work in the grave, which means faithfulness now matters.

Guidance
Hebrews 12:1-3 is the text. The writer tells us to run the race with endurance, looking to Jesus, who endured the cross for the joy set before him. Notice the order. Jesus endured because he saw the joy. Not because the cross felt good. Not because he liked it. Because he saw what was on the other side. The temptation to quit usually comes when you stop seeing the joy. You see the inbox. You see the conflict. You see the grind. You stop seeing what God is doing in you and through you. James 1:2-4 names it plainly. Testing produces steadfastness. Steadfastness makes you complete. The hard work is forming something in you. Patience. Endurance. Trust. You cannot see it yet, but it is happening. This week, when the urge to quit comes, ask this question: Am I quitting because the work is wrong, or because I have stopped seeing the joy? If it is the second, do not quit. Look to Jesus. See what he endured. See the joy he saw. Then stay one more week.
Notes from the Watch
I almost quit a job three years ago. I had the resignation letter written. I prayed about it for a week. God did not tell me to stay. He just asked me what I was running from. Turns out I was not running from the job. I was running from something in me the job was exposing. I stayed. It got harder before it got easier. But I am glad I stayed. Yours on the watch, Jeremy
One move this week
When the urge to quit comes this week, ask yourself: Am I quitting because the work is wrong, or because I have stopped seeing the joy? Pray before you decide.
