No. 13September 26, 2026· The Long Obedience

When the Work Does Not Pay

You have been faithful at work for years. You show up on time. You do what you said you would do. You carry more than your share. And some weeks it feels like no one notices and nothing changes. The promotion goes to someone else. The client does not call back. The project you poured yourself into gets shelved. This is the long obedience in the place where most men spend most of their waking hours, and it tests you in ways that Sunday morning does not.

When the Work Does Not Pay
Scriptures
  • Colossians 3:23-24

Paul tells us to work as if we are working for the Lord, not for men, because our real reward comes from a different payroll.

  • 1 Corinthians 15:58

Paul promises that our labor in the Lord is not in vain, even when it looks like it is going nowhere.

  • Proverbs 16:3

Solomon says to commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established, but established does not mean easy or quick.

Guidance
Paul tells the Colossians to work for the Lord, not for men. That sounds good until you realize it means your boss might never notice and your paycheck might never reflect what you are worth. Working for the Lord means you do excellent work even when no one is watching, even when the reward does not come, even when the guy next to you does half the work and gets twice the recognition. This is hard. It is supposed to be hard. The long obedience is long because it outlasts the shortcuts other men take. You are not building a resume. You are building a life that will stand when everything else shakes. The man who works with integrity when no one is looking is the man God trusts with more, but more does not always mean more money or more recognition. Sometimes it just means more character, and character is the thing you get to keep. This week, do one piece of work that no one will notice. Do it well. Do it as if Jesus is the one who will inspect it, because he is. Let that be enough. The reward is coming, but it is not coming from the people you think.
Notes from the Watch
I spent ten years in a job where I felt invisible. I did good work. I kept my word. I watched other men get ahead. I do not regret a single day of it now. Those years built something in me that I could not have built any other way. If you are in that place right now, I see you. God sees you. The work is not wasted. Keep going. Jeremy
One move this week
Do one task this week that no one will notice or thank you for. Do it with care, as if Jesus will inspect it himself.
